Karen Kern, M.A., CCC-SLP
Karen earned a Master of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 1998 from Montclair State University. Since that time she has gained extensive experience diagnosing and treating a wide range of communication challenges in children aged 2 and up.
Karen believes that a positive therapeutic environment is the key to genuine success and she values the connections she makes with the children on her caseload. She engages kids in fun and stimulating activities and adapts her therapeutic approach to suit each child's unique characteristics and challenges.
Karen works hard not only to establish meaningful and supportive relationships with each of the children she treats, but also with the important adults in their lives. She routinely collaborates with family members and caregivers, providing guidance and strategies for home-based support.
Karen has a commitment to continuous learning. She regularly attends workshops and seeks opportunities for professional development in order to keep her practical skills current and continually add to her clinical toolbox.
Karen is certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and licensed by the State of New Jersey. She specializes in treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). She is trained in DTTC (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing), PROMPT (PROMPTs for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets), and ReST (Rapid Syllable Transition treatment). She also has extensive experience treating children with articulation/phonological disorders, oral motor challenges, receptive/expressive language delays/disorders, and social communication difficulties.
